Manual QA Engineering for an After-School Program Management Platform

ABOUT THE PROJECT

A web-based management platform used by K-12 schools across the United States to administer after-school enrichment programs, summer camps, and extended care. The system handles enrollment, class registration, attendance tracking, refunds, and purchases — serving program coordinators, instructors, and parents from a single interface.

Business Objectives

01Build a QA process from scratch tailored to the platform's release cadence.

02Ensure consistent functionality for three distinct user groups: administrators, instructors, and parents.

03Validate payment flows across multiple methods and edge case scenarios.

04Maintain cross-browser and cross-device coverage for a geographically distributed user base.

Process Overview

Test Planning Designed a QA strategy and full test plan aligned to the platform's sprint-based development workflow.

Functional & Non-functional Testing Covered all core platform features including registration flows, payment processing, attendance, and refund handling.

Usability Testing Validated that each user role — administrator, instructor, parent — could navigate the platform without friction.

Cross-environment Coverage Executed cross-platform testing across web, iOS, and Android; cross-browser testing across Chrome, Edge, and Safari.

Payment Testing Covered multiple payment methods and failure scenarios end-to-end.

Defect Management Maintained structured bug reports with clear reproduction steps, severity classification, and fix verification throughout.

Challenges & Solutions

Challenge 1 — Three user types, three different expectations Administrators need operational precision, instructors need simplicity, parents need clarity. We structured usability testing around each role separately rather than treating the platform as a single surface.

Challenge 2 — Payment reliability Payment flows required zero tolerance for edge case failures. We mapped all supported methods and failure scenarios into dedicated test coverage, running payment testing as a standalone cycle before each release.

Technology Stack

Test Management: Test plans, checklists, test cases maintained throughout the engagement

Platforms Covered: Web, iOS, Android

Browsers Covered: Chrome, Edge, Safari

Defect Tracking: Bug reports with reproduction steps, severity classification, fix verification

Result

  • Fewer defects reaching production through structured pre-release gating
  • Smoother experience across all three user types
  • New features shipped with verified functionality
  • Payment flows validated across all supported methods and edge cases

Delivery Summary

The client shipped a more stable product with a QA process that fit how their team actually worked. Each release went out with documented coverage and verified functionality — giving the development team confidence in what they were deploying and reducing post-release firefighting.
